Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail

Royal Realty LLC • January 7, 2019

After a long week of phone calls, open houses, showings, leads, and office hours, taking a moment to hike with my family is required. I’m reminded how beautiful Hawaii is, most importantly I’m reminded how precious my family is. Makapu’u Point Lighthouse trail is one of my favorites.

March of 2018, I took my kids to hike the lighthouse trail. I’ve done it before without the kids, so I knew what to expect. It’s an easy kid-friendly paved trail. My eldest kid did this hike without any problems. Amazingly enough, he didn’t even complain! However, my little one was all over the place. He got distracted often picking up sticks, trying to jump off the side of the trail, running the other direction, etc. Next time I know to bring the stroller. Took us an hour to

If you go during whale seasons which is usually around December – March, you might be able to see whales. There are also binoculars off to the side of the trail. We didn’t get lucky this time. However, when I hiked this trail back in November 2017, we saw a bunch of whales. Off to this hike is the Makapu’u tide pools, one of Oahu’s secret hikes.

Parking

The gate opens at 7 am which allows you to drive further into a parking lot area.

Level of difficulty

EASY PEASY FRIEND! Take your kids, out of townies, and lazy family members! It’s a little steep but overall easy.

What to bring

SUNBLOCK and MORE SUNBLOCK, there is NO Shady area during this hike. Water and lots of it! There are not many bugs during this hike; bug spray would be unnecessary.

Address: 41-95 Kalanianaole Hwy, Waimanalo, HI 96795

After this hike, you’ll fall in love with Hawaii.

Buying your first home in Hawaii is more achievable than many think

As we head into the summer season, Hawaii’s real estate market continues to show resilience with some interesting shifts. With mortgage rates hovering around 6.4–6.8% and low inventory keeping competition alive, now is a strategic time to understand the nuances on Oahu and Maui. Oahu Snapshot (April/May 2026) Single-family homes remain in strong seller’s market territory with ~2.9 months of inventory and median prices around $1.15M–$1.16M. Condos are leaning more buyer-friendly at ~6.5 months of supply, with median prices near $500K showing slight softening. Sales volume is mixed — some neighborhoods like Downtown Honolulu to Nuuanu saw big jumps, while others are steadier. Days on market are increasing slightly as buyers are more selective. Maui Snapshot Single-family median prices rebounded to ~$1.29M–$1.30M. Condo market remains more buyer-oriented with higher inventory and median prices around $650K–$700K. Sales activity has been up year-over-year in some segments, but buyers are taking their time post recent weather and regulatory impacts. Key Factors Influencing the Market Rising rates due to global events, low overall inventory, and lingering effects from earlier 2026 weather events. Actionable Advice Buyers : Stronger negotiating power in condo segments. Sellers : Price realistically and prepare for slightly longer market times. Investors : Opportunities in well-managed long-term rentals.
