Moving to Hawaii Checklist

Special checklist tailored for people moving to Hawaii.

 


 

Three Months Before

 

 □  If you have a pet, familiarize yourself with the procedure for relocating domestic animals to the State of Hawaii. ( https://www.petrelocation.com/country/importing-pets-to-usa/hawaii )

 

 □  Consider researching schools districts ( http://www.hawaiipublicschools.org/ParentsAndStudents/EnrollingInSchool/SchoolFinder/Pages/home.aspx... .

 

 □  Read our post “Discover Oahu” to get a better feel for the many, distinctive neighborhoods on Oahu.

 

 □  Prepare a folder to keep all moving documents and other important paperwork at hand.

 


 

Two Months Before

 

 □  Acquire quotes with vehicle shipping services and confirm a date.

 

 □  Acquire estimates from professional moving companies and confirm a moving date.

 

 □  Consider donating or selling unused items through portals such as Facebook Marketplace.

 

 □  Research rentals on Craigslist or Zillow (only for educational purposes, do not callthis far in advance).

 

 □  Book your VRBO for a minimum of 5 nights.

 

 □  Book your one-way ticket if you haven’t done so yet.

 

 □  Book a rental car or download the Uber/Lyft app on your phone.

 


 

One Month Before

 

 □  Prepare your car for transportation: ex. cleanit, take pictures of the interior/exterior, remove items, service vehicle.

 

 □  Start packing items not used daily.

 

 □  Measure your large items and keep notes in your moving folder.

 

 □  Request copies of all medical records from current doctors.

 

 □  Obtain copies of school records and inquire about the transferring process.

 


 

One Week Before

 

 □  Call agents or private landlords to schedule showings.

 

 □  Contact moving company and vehicle transportation services to confirm date.

 

 □  Continue to pack, ideally at this point you should be living out of a suitcase.

 


 

During your Search for a Rental

 

 □  Confirm showing appointments with agents or private landlords on the day of.

 

 □  Bring a measuring tape.

 

 □  Jot down questions to ask during your showings.

 

 □  Be prepared to apply for the unit at the showing; bring copies of IDs, proof ofincome or offer letter, and cash to the showings.

 


 

After Finding a Rental

 

 □  Complete a change of address at usps.gov.

 

 □  Update your address with your bank, credit cards, insurance companies, etc.

 

 □  Selecta new financial institution in Hawaii.

 

 □  Make arrangements to obtain a Hawaii State driver license, if necessary.

 

 □  Register your vehicle.

 

 □  Meet with your new health care provider to confirm transfer of medical records.

 

 □  Meet with your new dental provider to confirm transfer of dental records.

 

 □  Register your children for school.
