Finding a Rental
Tips when looking for a Rental in Oahu.
Best Website Advertising Rentals
In Honolulu, the best website to find a rental is on Craigslist or Zillow. Craigslist has apartments listed by property managers and private homeowners. Zillow has many locations listed primarily by realtors.
Hotpads, Trulia, Rent.com, Facebook Marketplace, and Apartments.com are valuable resources as well. Feel free to follow us @royalrealtyhawaii for updates on available rentals.
Finding a Rental with Pets
Finding a pet-friendly rental in Oahu is challenging. Here is a list of Condos in Honolulu that are pet-friendly. Please note, the building may be pet-friendly; however, the owner of the unit may not. When looking for a pet-friendly rental, it’s best to look for an Ohana dwelling or single-family home.
Keep in mind your rights with emotional or service dogs. Landlords are not allowed to deny your rental application because you have a service or emotional support animal.
Signs It's a Scam
If a rental is “TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE,” it’s a scam. Beware, Craigslist is one of the best websites to utilize when looking for a rental, but there are many scammers on there. Here are a few signals to notice.
Rental price advertised in the add is much below its market value.
The landlord is not willing to show you the property on site and/or in person.
The landlord is out of the “country” and unable to meet with you.
The landlord is asking you to wire money.
Applying
The rental market is competitive! Once you find the perfect rental, you’ll want to apply ASAP. One moment it’s available, the next it’s rented and no longer available. The search continues……
Be prepared during showings, bring your ID, proof of income and cash for the application fee. You’ll want to thoroughly inspect the unit, check the appliances, open all the cupboards, check the locks on the doors and ask all the right questions before applying.
